The Problem

Sandy Hook Elementary School faced substantial roof deterioration across multiple sections, jeopardizing both its structural integrity and the comfort of student learning environments. The worn EPDM membrane and failing insulation heightened concerns about water infiltration, energy efficiency, and interior protection. Insufficient drainage also increased the risk of leaks and interior damage, creating an urgent need for a robust and reliable roofing solution to support school operations.

The Solution

Skyline Roofing delivered a comprehensive re-roofing solution tailored to the unique needs of each section at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We began by removing the aging EPDM membrane and outdated insulation in each section, replacing them with modern, high-quality materials designed to withstand the elements and improve the roof's energy efficiency.

  • Section 1: We installed a new 60-mil TPO membrane over upgraded insulation to enhance energy performance. The perimeter was reinforced with wood blocking, and new retrofit drains were added to optimize water flow. Premium TPO walkway pads and splash pads were also installed at access points and downspout locations to protect high-traffic areas.

  • Section 2: Old exhaust vents and curbs were removed and replaced with new steel decking and insulation. To improve water management, a new box gutter system and downspouts were added for better rainwater runoff control.

  • Section 3: We replaced deteriorated insulation and EPDM membrane, installing new scuppers and leader heads to promote efficient drainage.

Across all sections, 24-gauge Kynar-finished edge metal was installed along the perimeter for enhanced durability, and sacrificial TPO membranes were added beneath mechanical equipment to prevent wear.

The Benefit

The new roofing system at Sandy Hook Elementary School provides superior water resistance, improved energy efficiency, and long-term durability. With the upgraded insulation, efficient drainage, and reinforced TPO membrane, the roof is built to withstand weather impacts and protect the building’s interior. The project is backed by a 20-year manufacturer's warranty and a 2-year contractor warranty, giving the school peace of mind with minimal maintenance needs.

This re-roofing project not only addresses the school's immediate needs but also ensures a safe, comfortable student learning environment, securing the building’s longevity and performance for years to come.
