Revitalizing Holy Cross Catholic Church’s Roof
Our team is thrilled to provide a mid-project update on the re-roof of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Lynchburg, VA. This project involves significant improvements to the Upper Commons and Sacristy roof areas to prioritize durability and energy efficiency.
The Problem
The Upper Commons roof presented unique challenges during the tie-in process, as integrating the new EPDM roof system with the existing slate roof required precise planning to maintain the building's historical integrity while meeting modern waterproofing standards. Our team also discovered irregularities in the slate roof structure, complicating alignment and securement efforts and posing risks of leaks or long-term performance issues.
Our Solution
To address the tie-in challenges, we had to modify our approach by implementing custom-fabricated EPDM flashings, reinforcing connection points with additional insulation, and securely bonding the EPDM roof to the slate with solvent-free adhesive for a watertight and cohesive finish. The completed Upper Commons now features a durable EPDM system, upgraded insulation, 6” K-Style copper gutters and downspouts, 16 oz copper coping along the wall, and walk pads near the slate transition to enhance maintenance safety.
Looking Ahead
Our team is now shifting focus to the Sacristy roof, where we are removing the existing metal roof to make way for a modern, self-adhered 60 mil gray TPO system. This stage involves careful coordination to protect the church’s interior and ensure minimal disruption to church activities.
As we proceed with the Sacristy roof, our team remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship and safety. The integration of the new TPO system with existing structures will include careful attention to termination bar and counter-flashing details, ensuring durability and a 20-year warranty-backed performance.
